CHAPLAIN’S WRITING GROUP

We are honored to share a collection of writings from men & women at Elmwood Correctional Facility who participated in our Chaplain’s Writing Group. Each piece reflects a willingness to be seen, to reflect honestly, and to put words to experiences that are often difficult to express.

Writing can be a powerful path toward healing. It creates space to process memories, regrets, and hopes—and to begin moving forward with greater clarity and purpose. It is our hope that these reflections offer not only insight into the lives of these men, but also a reminder of our shared humanity.

All writings are published with permission, and initials are used to protect each writer’s privacy.

This work is deeply collaborative. We are grateful for the faithful volunteers from St. Mark’s—Peter, Lena, Anne, Diane, and Bill—who showed up week after week. We also thank St. Mark’s community for their continued support and prayers, Santa Clara County’s Programs Division (especially RO Xan) for their partnership, and the Episcopal Impact Fund for helping bring this program to life. Special thanks to Audrey for her thoughtful design.

We celebrate the courage and creativity of these men & women, and we look forward to continuing this meaningful work.
